This morning we discuss the interesting way we, the Jewish People, make the Shabbat, even though it starts automatically at sunset. We analyze the insight of Or HaChaim, that our Mitzvah, to start Shabbat early - the general custom is 18 minutes before sunset - creates the reality of Shabbat to which even God agrees, and expresses our yearning and enthusiasm for the holiness of Shabbat. This yearning and enthusiasm is as important as the careful observance of the details of Shabbat.

Michael Whitman is the senior rabbi of ADATH Congregation in Hampstead, Quebec, and an adjunct professor at McGill University Faculty of Law.
