Mādhavendra Purī had no hesitation to go all the way back, just to be noted, whatever trouble he was taking. He took it as a burden of love, of course, but it did mention there that Gopāla wanted to spare His devotee any extra inconvenience, so he had him offer the sandwich locally. But your observation about "ye yathā māṁ prapadyante—that as one surrenders unto Me, I reward them accordingly"—is also apt and important. It's important that we notice Kṛṣṇa's reciprocation and how kind He is. That's the quintessential attitude of a devotee, as expressed in:

tat te ’nukampāṁ su-samīkṣamāṇo

bhuñjāna evātma-kṛtaṁ vipākam

hṛd-vāg-vapurbhir vidadhan namas te

jīveta yo mukti-pade sa dāya-bhāk

(SB 10.14.8)

..that the devotee sees that whatever comes is Kṛṣṇa's mercy. He's doing it purposefully in order to benedict me more and bring me closer to Him. That was a really nice observation.
