Ellen Degeneres, the comedian, actress, and talk show host, has faced her fair share of controversies. First, she was literally cancelled in 1997 after coming out as gay on network television.

Actress Portia de Rossi—young and in the closet—watched Ellen come out and rebuild her career, in awe and terrified of ever doing the same.
