112 Overcoming Trauma with Hope featuring Dr. Timothy Johanson, MD

Listen Later

“It’s interesting how different people react to crisis like this… we have to keep our heads and we have to work together…” -Dr. Timothy Johanson, MD
Guest: Dr. Timothy Johanson, MD
Topics Covered: Keeping calm during COVID-19, what makes good doctors, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), epigenetics, why we should establish deep relationships before challenging people, parenting, the importance of flexibility in the medical profession, and why he conducts piano concertos with no one present in the room besides himself.
This episode features a deep-dive into the story, life, and work of Dr. Timothy Johanson.
Timothy Johanson fits as the perfect guest for this podcast. He exemplifies someone who was an at-risk-youth growing up, suffering through early childhood trauma, but had three men, who be calls his surrogate-mentor-fathers come into his life and provide the modeling, mentoring, and care he needed. He now serves as a mentor, coach, teacher, and professor to pediatric residents at the University of Arizona.
He recently published a book called “Gist: The Essence of Raising Life-Ready Kids” and has been honored with many awards such as The Community Pediatrics Teacher of the Year Award and Best Doctor Award from the Minneapolis State magazine.
You will hear him talk about having a mother who died by suicide, living with his alcoholic and abusive father, but speckled through the entire episode you will hear him talk about the hope, honor, joy, and privilege he feels in his work mentoring the next generation of pediatricians.
Ultimately Tim is the success-mentor story that I want for our at-risk-youth. Someone who was brought-in, raised-up, and loved-on by mentors, now devotes his life to doing the same for others.
