Skyler Bascom:
Hi, you’re listening to the Mentored Podcast and I am your host, Skyler Bascom. This January we organized a Mentored-UP Event. The goal of the event was to inspire and challenge men to show up, live out and speak in as mentors in our community. To accomplish this we brought in Dakotah Keys, Donald Lewis, and Justin Meier as guest speakers. Dakotah Keys is a back to back to back, three time Pac-12 Champion. He shared about the importance of failing hard and allowing those around us to fail. Donald Lewis is a well known author, historian, and professor by day, but moonlights as a Secret Agent mentor to Christian leaders, worldwide by night. Justin Meier is a personal friend and aspiring author. He shows how God was the Ultimate Mentor in mind, body and spirit.
This episode is a live recording of Donald Lewis, PhD., historian and professor. He highlights the profound impact that all of us can have as trusted friends. He leans on his personal experience of being a mentor to over hundreds of men worldwide. Donald is a Secret Agent Mentor. He is disguised as a historian and Professor at Region College, but in fact travels around the world to pray and encourage Christian leaders. In his talk, you’ll hear him share about a secret-five-part-formula of being a trusted friend. Number one, pick your mentee. Number two, listen with your eyes. Number three, ask follow up questions. Number four, pray and number five, follow up.
As you’ll hear in my introduction, introducing him to this live talk, he has been a personal mentor to me. I suffered depression in 2014 and he came alongside me as my personal mentor, and ever since he’s guided me through ups, downs, through valleys and hills in my personal walk. He’s been nothing but support and encouragement and I’m very privileged I was able to share him with this live audience and also very privileged to share him with you. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I have.
Skyler Bascom:
When the student is ready, the teacher appears. In 2014, I was studying up in Canada, in British Columbia and I worked at a library. My job was just to check in books. One time, this older gentleman came up and checked in books and he said, “hey, can I pray for you?” And right away I said, “like right now?” He’s like,” Well, how about we go into your back office there, and I’ll pray for you?” He appeared at just the right time in my life. I happen to get diagnosed with depression that week.
