Wayland Cubit pioneered and developed a one-of-a-kind mentoring program in the heart of Oklahoma City called FACT mentoring. Wayland Cubit is a Lieutenant for the OKC Police Department where he has served for over 23 years. He is currently running for Sheriff of Oklahoma County. He has been featured on TEDx where he delivers a great talk about racial bias and police work. Since he is both black and a police officer, he offers a unique perspective into the bias issues that disrupt our racial justice and police work. 

Wayland and his team of police officers operate from an alternative approach to police work. They use relationship and community outreach as the primary intervention to help at-risk-youth steer clear of gang affiliation. He talks about how police officers who serve in FACT mentoring are always “10-8,” meaning they are never off of work. He talks about how FACT mentoring has become a replacement family for many gang members. We cover the concept of walking the game of mentoring and not just “teaching” and “talking” the “talk.”
