For Jesus, there is a devil and his demons. For post-enlightenment westerners, there seem to be a couple of alternate and unhealthy ideologies: on one side we might see paranoia and superstition played out to ridiculous extremes (like your car battery died and it must be a demon) and on the other we see a complete dismissal or volitional ignorance toward any kind of spiritual evil at work in the world. While we have nothing to fear, as Jesus followers we are called to be alert and aware of this enemy’s schemes. Is it possible that Jesus knew the true nature of reality better than we do and that He empowers us not only to walk in it but to share that same freedom with others?
