A reading of chapter one, "Self", of D.M. Hutchinson's book Plotinus on Consciousness. This chapter introduces the "levels of the self" in Plotinus's philosophy. The "true self" is, for Plotinus, identified with the "higher soul". It explores the way Plotinus thinks individual souls are related and distinct from one another, and distinguishes Plotinus's thinking about consciousness from modern concepts of subjectivity.
