11. toukokuuta vuonna 1986 Timberline Lodge hiihtokeskuksen edestä Mount Hoodin huippua valloittamaan lähti yhteensä 20 ihmistä. 15 nuorta sekä 5 aikuista. Tunnelma oli odottava ja innostunut, eikä kukaan heistä tuolloin aavistanut, etteivät he kaikki tulisi selviämään takaisin.
