One of the questions I get asked most frequently by people considering joining my program, Become a Bookkeeper, is whether or not they should get a bookkeeping certification.

My answer is…yes, I believe you should. However, you don’t HAVE to get certified in order to do the work of bookkeeping…in fact, certifications don’t teach you much about the actual WORK at all.

Certifications are designed for people who already have a basic working knowledge of bookkeeping; their purpose isn’t to teach you how to be a bookkeeper. So while they can make it much easier to navigate the specific software you’re getting certified in, they don’t fill in any gaps in your knowledge…which is where a program like Become a Bookkeeper comes in. Let’s discuss the pros, cons, and shortcomings of certifications.
