How are we feeling after the year-end rush?

At least, I hope it’s all wrapped up for you by now! Over here, we’re just finishing up a couple final tasks, and we’re feeling pretty good. Thanks to my year-end review process, the whole thing went off relatively without a hitch. 

Year-end is always going to be stressful, regardless of how well you prepare…but there is a difference between something being stressful and something being chaotic, and that shift can mean the difference between delivering a beautiful set of reconciled books to your client at the end of the year or handing them a messy set of books that barely got done in time for them to hand over to their CPA.

Tax season is upon us, which means it’s time to tackle a dilemma every bookkeeper will likely come across eventually: how to work with CPAs who, let’s be honest, kind of treat you like you’re dumb.

It’s just true. There’s not really a nicer way to say it. CPAs think bookkeepers are dumb…and that’s actually GOOD news for you.

You know why?

Because you’re a GOOD bookkeeper.

There are a lot of bad bookkeepers out there, and most CPAs have been burned before. So if you can get in there and prove that you do good work…you’re going to end up with a very impressed CPA.

Back in 2022, I had…a very wild week.

Not an unusual thing for me; it wasn’t my first, nor was it anywhere near my last. But after this particular week, I sat down and shared some thoughts about building your business with the expectation that life is going to happen…something many business owners don’t necessarily consider.

One of my favorite nuggets from this message?

“Act in optimism, but plan in pessimism.”

AKA, act as if everything will go according to plan…but plan as if nothing will go according to plan.

Before the year ends, I want to revisit an episode I did earlier in 2024. An episode that focused on one simple question

“What do you want?”

We don’t stop and ask ourselves this question very often. At least, not in earnest. Not with the intention of getting to the root of what we truly desire.

Why? Who knows. Maybe because we think we aren’t allowed to want things. Maybe because we’ve forgotten how to dream big. Maybe because we don’t believe we can do as big as we dream.

Whatever the reason is, I want you to pretend it doesn’t exist for a little while…and instead, I want you to do a little exercise with me.

I have a feeling your 2025 will be a lot more successful if you go into it with a clear idea of what you ACTUALLY want to accomplish…not what you think is possible for you to accomplish.

Most people hear “bookkeeping certification” and think that earning one will automatically qualify them as a bookkeeper…

And they couldn’t be more wrong.

The term “bookkeeping certification” can be misleading; when you get certified through certain bookkeeping softwares, such as QuickBooks or Xero, you’re not getting certified in the actual JOB of bookkeeping—you’re getting certified in the SOFTWARE.

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get certified—in fact, I think you probably should—but there’s more to bookkeeping than simply getting certified. (And honestly, you don’t even need to be certified in anything to do the work!)

Here’s why you SHOULD get certified…and the reasons you don’t actually NEED to get certified.

We’ve talked about how paralyzing imposter syndrome and the fear of failure can be…

But what happens when you take the leap, get that first client…and they ask you a question that totally stumps you?

The fear of not knowing the right answer is often rooted in the fear of looking “stupid” or embarrassing yourself in front of a client. It’s very common, especially when you’re first starting out.

I have good news and bad news.

The bad news? This scenario absolutely WILL happen. No matter how good you are at your job, you will eventually come across a question you don’t know the answer to.

The good news? Your client will not drop you for not knowing an answer, because NOBODY has all the answers…and nobody expects you to have them all, either.

There’s a very simple way to tackle not knowing something. Let me show you how I do it.
