I'm a 34-year-old award-winning broadcast journalist and UK Chevening Scholar from Cape Town, South Africa. In 2024 I completed an MA in Contemporary History and International Politics at the University of York, England with distinction. This experience sharpened my skills in researching and analysing complex historical and geopolitical issues and set me on a path to becoming a lecturer in media, history, or politics. I’m passionate about pursuing historical investigations, producing documentaries, and offering political analysis in South Africa’s media landscape, all to empower the next generation of South African media professionals. My dissertation, ‘1966 and All That: Britain’s Relationship with ‘High’ Apartheid South Africa,’ was supported by the University of York’s James Jarvis Memorial Bursary, to publish unreleased British Foreign Office archives.
After 14 years as a journalist, anchor, and producer for top news broadcasters like eTV, eNCA, EWN, CBC, and AFP, I've earned awards, mentored rising media stars, and am now exploring new roles—whether it’s continuing as a senior news broadcaster, stepping into academia as a lecturer, diving into expert research and analysis, or expanding into communications. I’ve previously held the role of Breakfast News Anchor and Desk Editor for Eyewitness News on Cape Talk radio, and in 2022, I co-founded Born-Rauby Productions, a company focused on major documentaries and investigative news stories. We’re currently developing our first major title.
From reporting on the death of Nelson Mandela in 2013 to covering the intense protests over farm deaths in 2020, I've had the privilege of observing and documenting pivotal moments in South Africa’s recent history. My work with major media outlets has given me a deep understanding of the country’s judicial system, election processes, key policymakers, and the socio-economic factors that both drive and hinder our progress. Despite the strides made since the end of apartheid, many South Africans continue to face economic exclusion and a lack of basic services. I've taken a keen interest in these issues, especially around municipal governance and regional politics. Notably, I exposed Cape Town's years-long lack of preparation for the 2017 water crisis and have since reported on similar issues linked to municipal corruption across South Africa. I’ve also delved into the untold stories of anti-apartheid heroes and lesser-known conflicts like the South African Border War.
