Readings in Platonism

1.3 Plotinus on Consciousness: Chapter 2: "Consciousness Terms"

Listen Later

A reading of chapter three, "Consciousness Terms", of D.M. Hutchinson's book, Plotinus on Consciousness. In this chapter, the author provides an explanation of a handful of key terms Plotinus uses for distinct features or forms of consciousness. "Consciousness" is not one thing, but an umbrella term encompassing a group of distinct cognitive phenomena. Plotinus distinguishes "self-consciousness" (parakolouthēsis) from "conscious awareness" (antilēpsis), and both from "sentience" or "sensitivity" (synaisthēsis).
