Cool Guinness marketing campaign using NFC technology
Guinness is running an NFC promotion where you tap your smarsmartphoneinst the tap and you can win a pint. Previously they did a QR Code glass that was only visible with Guinness in it.
We talk about craft beers that we like.
Bob interviewed Parallel 49 Brewery last year which was a great interview about their beer.
Voice Mail Feedback from Paul
Nozi Paul called in from the Vancouver airport and left a message to thank everyone for a great Bunker evening. Paul was heading overseas to the ICAN meeting. Paul is an a domain name activist and attends meetings around the world and is concerned about the future of the internet if dottless domains are implemented.
Voice Mail Feedback from Norm
Nexus 7 vs iPad Mini
Norm calls in to let us know he is thinking about getting a new tablet but is torn between getting a Nexus 7 or an iPad mini. He is concerned that Google is only selling the hardware for less money because they are interested in harvesting your data. Should he go with Apple to avoid his information being harvested or should he sell himself to Google to get a deal?
We talk about:
Nexus 7 vs iPad
Android Apps vs iOS Apps
Nexus 7 vs Nexus 4
Settings in your Android phone to block kids from buying apps
Bob talks about his experience buying the Nexus 7. He played with it for 2 days and then boxed it back up and sent it back. He returned it because he has a Nexus 4 and it is basically a bigger Nexus 4. Bob needs a device for production, not consumption. So he sent it back.
Bob says the Tech pundits sell a lot of tech to people who don’t really need it. Leo Laporte drives a lot of sales because he buys everything and says they are all great and recommends everybody buys all the gear.
Remember to check for restocking fees before you buy tech devices.
Margaret brings up Nova Launcher:
Ken and Margaret explain how Nova Launcher works.
Android Launcher
Changes the Graphic User Interface
Organizes your phone the way you like
Put as many apps as you want on your dock
A lot of cool customizations
Puts all apps in one page (continuous scroll)
Blackberry Messenger (BBM)
Blackberry is going to be licensing BBM technology to other platforms.
Andrew explains how BBM works and why it was so popular back in the day. It has a lot of cool features which iMessage later adopted and Whats App.
Paul asks if licensing is a good idea for Blackberry? Andrew and Ken agree that is the right thing to do for Blackberry and they should have done it much sooner. By licensing BBM, Blackberry users will be able to BBM non Blackberry devices.
Blackberry as an Enterprise Device
Andrew talks about Blackberry and how it is still a great device for use in a corporate environment.
