奥登是公认的现代诗坛名家，也是著名的gay。46岁时开始和18岁的诗人Chester Kallman相恋，1973年(66岁)奥登在维也纳死于心脏病，两年后Kallman(40岁)死于雅典。他为Chester Kallman写了很多爱情诗，这是其中一首，名为Funeral Blues。这首诗被电影《四个婚礼和一个葬礼》引用，葬礼上为死者的吟诵感人肺腑，催人泪下。

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
