#16 Dealing with your emotions

Emotional eating can sabotage your weight loss journey.

I know this – I used to eat my emotions all the time.

I know when I would be stressed, annoyed or upset I'd go straight to eat something. And that something was  always a snickers chocolate bar.

I'd stop caring about my diet and what I was eating. I get blinded by my emotions. The crunchy snickers bar will make me feel so much better right? Maybe for a bit anyway.

Now, many people will find themselves after eating that one initial thing to make themselves feel much better after the argument with their spouse, friend or parents they continue to eat. They continue to grab biscuit after biscuit. Until those initial feelings have passed or been supressed.

Until the next time something emotional happens and you do it again. Why? Because grabbing something sugary can often lead to a dopamine release in the brain. This dopamine gives you a pleasure factor – which you will welcome if you feel like crap. So, it ends up being the go-to action every time you feel down in the dumps.

 

How can you start to deal with your emotional eating?

Think about:

-What is making you feel like this?

- How do you feel about feeling like this?

-  Why are you stuffing your face rather than dealing with this?

-  What can you do to deal with these emotions?

 

Now, this is something that will take time. There is no overnight fix but starting to be aware of your emotions will help you overcome emotional eating.
