Think As You Walk with Ariel

#16 - I'm leaving Brooklyn next year

Listen Later

It's time.

My rent went up far too high to justify living on the fourth floor with no elevator or laundry room. Although I'm fortunate to live in a spacious, two-bedroom apartment to myself with maximum transit accessibility, I fear my time in NYC is nearing its end. Even more so given I work remotely full-time. As a means to make moving easier, I'm committing to one more year this November with the intent to use these months to meet an aggressive savings goal that can allow me to place a calm down payment on a condo. $30K, no sweat. Most likely in New Jersey.

The sole condition I would consider staying in Brooklyn next year would be if I were to find an apartment that's an ABSOLUTE STEAL. An offer I would be dead wrong to refuse. Some of the minimum requirements I have in mind are common:

  • Is it reasonably priced for its square footage?
  • Does it meet the budget expectation that can allow me to continue investing 30-40% of my income?
  • Is it close to public transportation to visit family?
  • Is it close to a park to access nature?
  • I don't ask for much, a lot can happen in a year. No guarantees.

Wish me luck! I won't need it, but it's courteous.
