"Never Burn a Bridge" is practically a cliche at this point but as it turns out most people don't actually know what a burnt bridge looks like. As a matter of fact most of what we consider to be 'Burnt Bridges' are really just damaged bridges, and damages can be mended. So we have a lot more chances to create opportunity in our looser defined relationships than we may have originally thought.
