This week's episode was inspired by the tough conversations we have had since the news leaked that the Supreme Court is in the process of trying to overturn the Roe vs. Wade decision.
To get peripheral insight on the topic, and since we weren't necessarily wanting to get too deep into the politics just yet, we wanted to chat with someone who has worked with women who have had to make the hard decision to seek out an abortion. Specifically someone who has worked with the kind of women who would be directly impacted by the legislation being overturned. We felt that was important because as we know those with privilege, power and money won't be impacted in the same way that underprivileged, marginalized, minority women will be. So we interviewed Courtney Nelson — a Physician Assistant (PA) passionate about health equity, social justice, and patient advocacy. Prior to her work as a PA she spent a few years working at Planned Parenthood where she became intimately aware of the devastating socio-political dynamic that surrounds women’s health, family planning and reproductive rights.
As a heads up, we would like to be very clear that while we do hold our own opinions on this topic — and you will hear them on the episode, we are open to hearing where everyone is at on this topic. We like to keep the dialogue open as long as we can do so respectfully and with compassion.
We hope you enjoy the episode. We would love to hear your thoughts!
