#18: The 4 Writing Frameworks For Instantly Better Content

Listen Later

Hey everyone,

Welcome to another Content Love episode! In this one, I took some time to take you through some of my favorite chapters of one of the best books on writing out there—Roy Peter Clark’s Writing Tools: 55 Essential Strategies for Every Writer. I LOVE this book, and it has made a huge impact on how I approach my writing.

Even better, this episode will be helpful even to those of you that don’t necessarily write as a day-to-day job, but you’re maybe managing writers, hiring them, doing a lot of editing, or any similar work that requires you to contribute to a creative piece of work.

Listen in to hear about these four writing tools, as Roy Peter Clark calls these approaches to your writing:
  • Tool 11: Prefer the simple over the technical; all about using shorter words, sentences, and paragraphs at points of complexity
  • Tool 16: Seek original images; all about avoiding clichés and first-level creativity
  • Tool 24: Work from a plan; all about outlining your work, as well as indexing and naming its big parts to help the reader remember the whole story
  • Tool 40: Draft a mission statement about your work; all about working towards an ultimate result with your writing
  • Tools and other resources I’ve mentioned:
    • Hemingway Editor
    • Writing to Deadline: The Journalist at Work by Donald Murray
    • Airstory
    • I hope you’ll let me know what you think of these tools, and I can’t wait to hear how these tips have helped you! Don’t forget to tweet me to share your thoughts with me. Thank you so much for joining me today!
