They were farmers, had 8 children.  The oldest son (second child) was sent out to get bullets or shot and missed his fathers rampage, wiping the whole family out, including himself, on Christmas day in 1929.

Its about 60 years later that a motive comes to light but even now, its not confirmed that it is true.
