Crime Junkie

It started with a parked car near Philadelphia's Liberty Bell and a woman's voice from inside: "You're going to hurt me." Within hours, investigators were at the door of a boarded-up rowhouse in the city's Olney neighborhood. What they found inside raised more questions than answers, and months later, they're still trying to separate what's real from what was staged. So our team started digging into the house, the men who lived there, and the women whose trails lead back to it.

In May 2023, Lakesha Thompson’s entire family was upended by a single bullet that took their mother away from them forever. From the beginning, who pulled the trigger has been the question at the forefront of her family’s mind. Investigators determined pretty quickly that it was a self-inflicted wound. Except there are key pieces of evidence at the scene that just don’t line up. Her family has spent years fighting for a second look at the case…only to be told it’s closed… but that doesn’t mean the mystery is solved.

If you or anyone you know is thinking about suicide, please be aware that emotional support can be reached by calling or texting the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988.

• If you have relevant information about Lakesha Thompson or Nathan Fitten, you can text “CLAYTONPD” and your tip to 274637. They still classify this case as closed, so feel free to also send information to us by emailing [email protected].

In 2019, we covered the Sodder children, five siblings who vanished after their family’s home burned down on Christmas morning in 1945. Officials said they died in the fire, but no bodies were ever found. And now, with new information from a family descendant, we’re taking another look at what happened when their parents started asking questions, and why the family spent decades believing the children may have survived.

• If you have information that you believe could be related to the disappearance of the Sodder children, please contact us at [email protected] or Miranda Weeks at [email protected].

Come spiral with us as we recap the biggest true-crime documentary right now, "Death of the Pastor's Wife." The takes are hot, the eyes will roll, and Ashley and Brit will be trauma bonding as they reach back into their churchy upbringing to decode some unhinged religious takes. And of course, Ashley is coming with a bunch of information you won't get in the documentary that might help make sense of how Mica Miller ended up at Lumber River State Park in North Carolina on April 27, 2024.

Twenty-seven-year-old Natalie Jones vanished after a July 4th lake party in Alabama in 2020. Ninety-three days later, her car and her remains were found in a rural Georgia field. No arrest. No clear answer. No closure for the family left behind. The official theory was an accidental overdose. But a negative toxicology report, a drug baggie with no fingerprints, and a phone that never left Natalie's hand — one that’s still missing — tell a different story. Shortly before her death, Natalie had begun speaking out about the men in her life: a bitter ex-husband, an alleged childhood abuser, a lover tied to drug trafficking.

Listen to the second episode of The Truth About Natalie now, whenever you get your podcasts. New episodes release every Monday.

In 2011, 74-year-old high school sweethearts Bill and Peggy Stephenson were found murdered inside their Kentucky condo on Memorial Day weekend. Nothing valuable appeared to be missing, but the crime scene was so strange that detectives wondered whether the killer was trying to leave a message. For years, the case pulled investigators in every direction — until one piece of evidence, mailed across the country more than a decade earlier, finally got a hit.
