Society of the Snow is a new Spanish film based on the true story of the 1972 crash of a Uruguayan airplane in the uninhabitable Andes mountains. The event has had multiple adaptations over the years, but perhaps none quite as realistic as this. The film makes a strong effort to pay respect to the real-life victims, and features an incredibly horrifying depiction of the crash itself, which makes for the movie's most memorable sequence for its brutal realism. But that is only the beginning as those who survive the initial impact must find a way to endure the harsh conditions and remote environment, even if that means turning to cannibalism as their only option. We'd all like to think we wouldn't eat our mates, until it becomes the only option for survival. Speaking of surviving, after the review we discuss the best survival films of all-time, while debating what actually makes a movie a survival movie.
