Dr. Carroll is a health services investigator with an interest in improving pediatric outcomes. He has led multiple studies to improve adolescent diabetes through the use of information technology. First, he designed, developed, and studied the use of mobile technology to improve type 1 diabetes management in diabetes. Now, he is studying the use of clinical decision support to help primary care doctors better screen for, diagnose, and manage type 2 diabetes in adolescents. In addition, Dr. Carroll is the director of the Center for Pediatric and Adolescent Comparative Effectiveness Research, which establishes infrastructure to improve both comparative effectiveness and patient centered outcomes research at Indiana University. One of the initial projects compares the use of information technology and behavioral contracting to improve type 1 diabetes management in adolescents. Dr. Carroll is also engaged in a project to adapt the Diabetes Prevention Program for families, and a study is being conducted to test its efficacy against other programs in a number of settings.
Dr. Carroll is the author of the new book “The Bad Food Bible: How and Why to Eat Sinfully,” which suggests that when it comes to “sinful” eats, people may be misled by nutritional claims based on little substantive research.
We discussed his most recent column at the NY Times "Stop Expecting Life to Go Back to Normal Next Year Americans will need to take pandemic precautions well into 2021 — yes, even after a vaccine arrives."
