Hello! It's gonna be MAY. Lol. Dry. We wanted to give a quick shoutout and thanks to all our listeners as we celebrate 3 years of the podcast this month, what a time to be alive ay. Fark. Can’t believe we made it this far. Anywho! Thanks to the day ones, the for life-ers and the ride or dies, we appreciate you all so much for sticking with us!
This month, we are joined by none other than Jamaica Moana. If you don’t know the name, you will know by the end of this episode! She is beauty and she’s grace, she’s the non-binary rapper, a community leader in the Australian ballroom community and queer community, a multidisciplinary artist and MORE. Coming hot off releasing her latest track, collaborating with iconic ballroom figure, Kevin Jz Prodigy titled VICIOUS, there’s no stopping her now. Jamaica has built many accolades over the years throughout various industries, we can’t wait to see what is in store for her. Welcome, Jamaica Moana!
This topic was initially recommended to us in May 2019 with the original tweet from @Zahratonin stating “Brown girls should not have to decide between leaving their families for independence or compromising their happiness to appease their families.”
WOW, this is such a loaded statement not just for Pasifika, but also maybe even cultures that have strong religious beliefs with traditionally conservative values. We also wanted to take the moment to mention this discussion will be from the cis-hetero perspective as Pasifika women and that we acknowledge Samoa’s third and fourth gender, fa’afafine and fa’afatama who both have integral roles in a Samoan household from pre-colonisation, up until this day.
Thank you to everyone who commented on our Instagram post in regards to this topic. We appreciate it and will share some of your comments in this month's episode!
Surprise! 2 Brownish Girls has been renewed for another season (haha)
Today for our January 2022 episode, we’re absolutely stoked to have Sione Sisifa here today - the Director of Shotcaller Studio @shotcallerstudio who recently released the pilot for his self-funded show ‘Liana’ @lianatheshow on Youtube in December 2021.
The man of many beanies, Sione, joins us to discuss his journey as part of the Pasifika diaspora, his many lives in different creative scenes and what Pasifika representation means to him. From leaving his 'boring office job' in 2020 aka peak 'Rona times, he finds himself launching his first ever tv series.
With the pilot dropping, Sione is now looking for crowd funding to help support him make the rest of Season 1. You can find his info on our linktree via our Instagram: @2brownishgirls
For our November episode, we’re honoured to be joined by an amazing guest, who is Australia’s first Pasifika Professor - being the Professor and Chair of Social Work and Policy Studies in the Sydney School of Education and Social Work at The University of Sydney. We talk all things Pasifika, education, representation, Jioji's passions and how he likes to encourage the Pasifika community in more ways than one.
*TW* This episode contains sensitive subject matter in relation to Domestic Violence with a focus on the Pasifika-Australian diaspora and the cis-hetero relationship. This month, we are joined by Donina Va’a to share insights on her work in the community here in Sydney. This discussion will take place over two episodes, with this month focusing on the ground work taking place and next month, we’ll be joined by a friend of the podcast, to share her story as a domestic violence survivor. For any information on hotlines for support organisations in the South Pacific, we have recorded these at the end of the episode. Thanks for your patience on this episode being 5 days late!
