2 Corinthians 4:13-15

Listen Later

13 But since we have the same spirit of faith as that shown in what has been written, “I believed; therefore I spoke,” we also believe, therefore we also speak. 14 We do so because we know that the one who raised up Jesus will also raise us up with Jesus and will bring us with you into his presence. 15 For all these things are for your sake, so that the grace that is including more and more people may cause thanksgiving to increase to the glory of God.

REFLECTIONS

Written by Lachlan Shead

In the cross of Jesus, hope and suffering meet. But sometimes, when I'm suffering for the gospel, hope can feel pretty distant! Today's passage highlights that struggle for me, but it also offers answers and comfort.

Yesterday we heard about Paul's weakness and intense suffering. He was beaten and persecuted for preaching the gospel. But today we see that Paul still speaks up, despite knowing the cost. Paul tells us why he does this: it's because of his faith.

But I'm more interested in how he manages to press on speaking about Christ. Does Paul have a superpower? Is he just in denial about his suffering?

The answer comes in verse 13, where Paul quotes Psalm 116. It's a song about God's rescue from trouble. Verses 3 to 6 of the Psalm go like this:

"The cords of death entangled me,
 the anguish of the grave came over me;
 I was overcome by distress and sorrow.
Then I called on the name of the Lord:
    “Lord, save me!"

The Lord is gracious and righteous;
 our God is full of compassion.
The Lord protects the unwary;
when I was brought low, he saved me."

By quoting this psalm of David, Paul makes it clear that he shares David’s total dependence on God for rescue. He's still a jar of clay, and his suffering is deep.

How, then, does Paul keep on speaking up? It's by having a hope that's even deeper than his suffering. We see this in verse 14 of today's passage: just as Jesus rose from the dead, Paul looks forward to eternal life with him. And we share that hope!

Take some time now to thank God for your hope in Christ. Pray for the help to speak up about your faith today. And if you fear opposition, pray: "Lord, save me!" You can expect a “yes” in the risen Lord Jesus.
