Exodus 20:4–6. If I were to show you some Hindu homes, with their shrines to various gods, and then were to ask you where were the idols in your life, you might say you don’t have any. But we do! We have many. We just don’t see them. You may ask, how can we have many idols if we don’t see the shrines to other gods? We all have idols, often unrecognised. We need to identify our idols, and remove them, in order to worship God properly. It could take a whole series of sermons to break down how we idolise other gods. Or more properly, every sermon ought to pinpoint how we do so – so we will focus on this commandment for just this week, while continuing to work out the implications of it every week.
