The moral law (Ten Commandments) are not just legalistic rules imposed on us. They reflect the character of God. To be close to God, to be like God, we need to obey them. None of us has obeyed them. But Christ Jesus has. In him, therefore, is life. Through faith in him we have justification and life. And in him we can obey the moral law, follow Jesus, walk in the Spirit, and know the Father. The moral law is not optional, in knowing God.

The Ten Commandments are not just the standard that shows us that we are sinners and need to be justified by faith--they are the pattern for us to live and obey, so that we will walk more closely with Jesus, walking in the Spirit, knowing God as the God who is love.

The Ten Commandments, the moral law, will not prove how good we are. Instead, it shows how sinful we are, and points us to Christ. But, it is also the standard by which we ought to live, in order to be more like Jesus. Obedience to the law is being transformed to be more like Jesus. The moral law is our friend, not to be feared, through faith in Christ, but to be cherished.

Obedience to God's moral law is not simply obeying commands, it is how we love God. But we cannot love and obey without faith, without Christ. Let us draw near to Christ, to love and obey God.

Elders are Christ's gift to the church. Through the spiritual gifting of elders, and many other giftings, Christ leads the church. We pray for and humbly obey our elders in the Lord. Let us do so to give glory to Christ.
