Jesus' birth was the hope of the nation. It represented their coming of age in receiving their Messiah. Jesus' birth also represents hope for each person too, because in him we can be free from sin and relate to God by grace instead of law.

To benefit from Christ's birth, we need to not just appreciate it, but appropriate it. We need to not just believe he took on flesh and suffered and died, but that he did it for me, for my sins, that I am forgiven, that I have new life and hope in him.
