College Is Fine, Everything's Fine

#2 Finding Balance in the Extremes: Part 1 (Dialectics)

Listen Later

College is a time of extremes. Incredible freedom and intense pressure. Loving your independence and missing pieces of home. So many new people to meet, yes! And so many new people to meet, nooooo!

In psych speak we call these extremes "dialectics," the idea that two seemingly opposite truths can be occurring at the same time. This is a big topic so we're breaking it down a bit. In this episode (Part 1), we talk to "K," a rising junior at a liberal arts college who describes some of the extremes she faces.

We'll also share some of the most common dialectics people struggle with in college:
1) I want to try new things, and I want to remember who I am.
2) I'm excited to be here, and I'm terrified to be here.
3) I should be living in the moment, and I should be preparing for my future.
4) I need to push myself out of my comfort zone, and I need to stick to my core values.
5) I need to go out and have a good time, and I need to take care of my body.

Take a listen and see if you notice any of these dialectics in your life. In Part 2, which we'll air on September 23rd, we discuss some practical ways to bring more balance into your life when you find yourself too polarized on one extreme or the other.

Want to share your story, give us feedback or offer up an episode idea? Reach out! We'd love to hear from you.
