20 | Getting Creative About Art with Suzanne Finan

Let's explore how we can help our kids get more creative, express their feelings and enjoy the process of making art, without losing the functionality of your home to a glitter bomb and paint everywhere.

In this episode, beloved art teacher, Suzanne Finan helps us think about how we can encourage our kids to use everyday items and activities to inspire the creative outflow of art from our special needs kids. She shares how she helps her special needs students make beautiful art by breaking down steps, utilizing adaptive equipment and using non judgmental yet encouraging language around the pieces they create. We also talk about keeping that spark for creativity alive while still having some kind of control over the functionality of your home.

how to set up a dinner box for your kids to work on during that 'bewitching hour' prior to dinner

how to think about what art you want to save and what you can let go of

ways to hang on to your child's art that allows you to enjoy it without turning your home into an art gallery

how to encourage art among our kids with positive, non-judgmental language about what they create. (this one surprised me A LOT!!)

Suzanne Finan is the Visual Arts teacher at Notre Dame School of Dallas. A Cleveland, Ohio native, her early days were spent working for the Cleveland Museum and classroom instruction. In 2006, a move to Texas allowed Suzanne to spend time at the Kimball Art Museum mixed with teaching art independently throughout the DFW area. Suzanne believes that art is a window to a person’s soul and through art we can heal and discover our strength.
