Almost 2,000 pubs have closed in the State since 2005, says a new report from the drinks industry's umbrella organisation.

That's 22.5% of all pubs in the State, according to the organisation.

The report also indicates that 450 pubs have closed since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic – 108 of them last year – and that they are based in rural houses.

The drinks industry is petitioning the Government to give more support to small local pubs and, above all, to drastically reduce the excise duty on alcohol.
