In this second installment of “A Monk at Harvard,” Swami Padmanabha enters his first full week of classes at Harvard Divinity School and begins to discover what academic life actually demands—not only in terms of reading, writing, and navigating new intellectual frameworks, but also in the willingness to have one’s assumptions challenged. From exploring different courses and professors to learning how to read differently, manage an overwhelming amount of material, and find a sustainable rhythm between scholarship, spiritual practice, relationships, and rest, the initial excitement of arrival gradually gives way to a deeper process of adaptation and transformation.
Along the way, the episode reflects on some of the ideas that left the strongest impression during the week: the need to destabilize our perspectives through new evidence, upset rigid binaries, understand the stakes of what we are being taught, and recognize the complexity hidden within concepts we often take for granted. It also explores the difference between merely learning about religion and allowing ourselves to learn from it—to be affected by what we study. Through encounters with religious pluralism, mystical poetry, Black Elk, Tagore, collective effervescence, and the unexpected intersections between Harvard and his own devotional life, Swami reflects on education as something more than the accumulation of knowledge: an invitation to become more nuanced, more permeable, and ultimately more capable of being changed.
