AI chatbots improve their ability every interaction, every day, to sound more "real." But they are not. Yet more and more people say they ask AI for advice, guidance, or suggestions on real world relationships and problems. Nearly 50 percent in one study say they "trust" the advice.
That's a bad idea. Dr. Molly Pachan is an accomplished psychologist at the Lindner Center of Hope. She is fascinated by AI. She isn't out to vilify it. Dr. Pachan merely wants to educate her patients and colleagues about the limits of AI and why it can't replace a qualified human's ability to analyze a person's situation and know what is best for them. She says it's because AI is trained to tell you what you want to hear, and that is not the role of a therapist. The therapist is there to truly help you find your way.
AI chatbots are talking computers that we have programmed to find, summarize, and explain information, or create images, videos and other graphics quicker and better than we ever could in a short amount of time. There is a lot of good that can be done with them.
However, Dr. Pachan explains AI's limits and why you shouldn't use artificial intelligence in place of a human therapist.
