郑愁予自述该诗源自童年的逃难经历，他小学时，抗战就全面爆发开始了，父亲从陆军大学受训后一毕业就被送到湖北抗战前线，调去襄阳张自忠的部队，他则跟随着母亲经历过各种逃难，一路上看到很多伤兵；1948年12月，他到江南的一个村落，那里唤起了他童年时期逃难的记忆，有关炮车，有关战马的马蹄声，他把这些冒出的经历艺术化，写成了《错误》。这首诗的主角就是以郑愁予母亲为原型的。

I passed through the South of Yangzi

The face waiting at the turn of seasons,like a lotus flower, blooms and wilts

我打江南走过

那等在季节里的容颜如莲花的开落

Without the east wind, the willow catkinsin March do not flutter

Your heart is like the lonesome little town

Like its streets of cobblestones nearnightfall

When footfalls are silent and the bedcurtains of March not unveiled

Your heart is a little window tightly shut

东风不来，三月的柳絮不飞

你的心如小小寂寞的城

恰若青石的街道向晚

跫音不响，三月的春帷不揭

你的心是小小的窗扉紧掩
