"It doesn't matter what you choose to do. Your child is going to grow up, have things to deal with, have things that they're going to need to reprogram". - Guy and Ilan Ferdman"
The Chemicals That Make Kids Happy and Motivated with Loretta Breuning
Loretta Breuning was a Professor of Management for 25 years. She got interested in studying the real substance of motivation, which is chemical. This started when she noticed that her students and her own children were not very motivated. She focuses on what she called the happy chemicals, which are dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphins. And every one of them has a specific job to do, which is different. They reward you for behaviors that promote survival in the state of nature, even though you're not thinking.
She started to study the kind of motivation with kids. She also shared a book of "habits of a happy brain". The book shares how can you show kids in a simple way that they can do it? And also the book talks a lot about reprogramming. Loretta talks about serotonin a lot. We'd love to kind of start the conversation there because, for us, that was fascinating. And by the way, the next book she is zooming in on the serotonin piece. The purpose of her book is to sort of broaden up and realize that there are lots of different ways to feel good, instead of relying on one. You can build new circuits to have more sorts of tools in your toolkit.
"Each of us is unique because each of us was built from the random chance of their early experience. Loretta Breuning"
Important Notes:
Have endless happy chemicals while sitting on the couch for no reason.
Serotonin rewards you with a good feeling when you assert and prevail. But I would call it calm confidence.
If you feed your brain new experiences, a new pathway will build.
Oxytocin is what makes it creates social trust.
Making a decision.
Learning to decide in a healthy way and where to invest your energy rather than to chase a lost cause.
