21: 5 Minute Fridays: On Boundaries

Listen Later

On today’s 5 Minute Friday podcast, I dive into the world of boundaries. What they are, why we struggle to create them and how to start embracing the power of no, for your sake and for those around you.

On this podcast you will learn:

  • What boundaries are
  • Why babies and animals are expert at setting boundaries
  • What Brene Brown thinks of people pleasers
  • Why it’s helpful for you and others to create boundaries
  • Why role generosity plays in setting and creating boundaries
  • My top tips and insights on setting boundaries
  • My favorite quote from Kelly Corrigan on the power of saying, “no”
  • "Sexually, professionally, personally, saying no takes balls. Little noes prepare us for the big noes that define the major movements of our lives. The job we shouldn't take, the relationship we must leave, the deal that seems shady. No, finally, to another drink, no to abuse, no to getting back together again. No to extreme lifesaving measures.

When we were children, no came easily to the lips. Wear a coat? Turning off the TV? Leaving your sister alone? No chance. But then we became civilized. We aged into self consciousness. Saying no started to feel rude or insubordinate, mean or lazy, withholding or dangerous. There's hardly a positive intention associated with no. Except self-preservation."

    Kelly Corrigan

Elisa Haggarty is a Conscious Leadership Coach and host of The School of Unlearning Podcast. Elisa has been a coach for over 18 years- from college basketball to nutrition to more recently helping leaders bring more consciousness and play into their personal and work lives. Her work is influenced by a philosophy and belief that, "life happens for you" which has been a through line for Elisa her entire life. Believing life happens for you begs the question, "how can I learn and grow from whatever is happening?". She has sought to find and create meaning from every chapter of her life and empowers her clients and teams to do the same. From her first heartbreak, first job loss, divorce and enduring the grief that comes with slowly losing her Dad to a rare form of Dementia, Elisa's rich life experience and humble curiosity is what allows others to connect with her, and ultimately themselves in a deeper way. She finds joy in making her friends homemade chocolate and can most often be found hiking or spending time in nature and has two adorable cats, Josie and Lou.
