21. How Businesses Can Step up To Support Women in The Workplace

Listen Later

The year 2020 has redefined the workplace. Boundaries between work and home are now blurred, and women in particular have been negatively impacted. Instead of a double-shift of working then caring for their families at home, the two hats they wear now overlap. Black women already faced additional barriers with workplace advancement, but now they’re grappling with the disproportionate impacted of COVID-19 as well as the emotional toll of racial violence.

With these issues shaking up the workforce, how can businesses step up to help?

The key to retaining the female workforce and build equal opportunity is to foster a flexible, empathetic workplace. Simple adjustments and loosening the reins on how work “should” look can help women perform better than ever before - and keep their seat at the table. Jillian discusses the adjustments she’s made on her team to help inspire businesses big and small to reexamine the status quo.

Takeaways from this episode:
- Small businesses are not only positioned to make workplace changes happen, but they may even have the advantage. They’re smaller, nimbler, and able to enact changes quickly.
- Give your team the flexibility they need in terms of hours and location. This gives teams the freedom to work when and where they are able. Empower your team.
- Accommodate not only your employees, but their children too, and understand that creating an environment that benefits them benefits everyone.
- 1 in 5 employees have consistently felt uninformed during COVID-19. Keep the lines of communication open so all feel valued and understood. Transparency goes a long way.
- Recognize that employees are wearing multiple hats right now, but productivity can continue and even improve with the right measures.
- There’s a reason there’s the saying, “If you need something done quickly and correctly, hire a mom.”
