21. Trauma, Propaganda, and the Loss of Compassion

Listen Later

Why does compassion feel harder right now? Why do conversations shut down so quickly? And why does questioning certain beliefs feel like a personal attack?

In this episode, I explore the connection between unprocessed trauma and propaganda, and how survival shapes the way people seek safety, certainty, and identity. Drawing from my family’s lived experience, I break down how trauma conditions people to prioritize safety over curiosity - and how propaganda exploits that need by offering something to cling to.

She unpacks the idea of savior identity - how a country, system, or belief can become untouchable when it’s tied to survival - and why questioning it can feel like questioning the self. When identity is built around survival rather than awareness, compassion often goes offline, defensiveness takes over, and logic stops landing.

This episode also connects these dynamics to relationships, showing how the same survival patterns appear in closeness: staying because it feels safer than leaving, shutting down honesty to keep stability, and confusing protection with connection.

At its core, this conversation is about safety - how it’s wired, how it’s outsourced, and why building internal safety is what allows curiosity, compassion, and choice to return.
