#215 [Web TV] DO Talk To Strangers

Listen Later

This week’s video is a little longer than usual but worth the 8 minutes of your time! I introduce the author of “Do Talk To Strangers”, my friend Kerrie Phipps. We caught up recently for coffee and an early morning walk on the beach, which explains the au-naturale look and guerilla camera work!
Kerrie shares some great practical tips on how to connect and network at conferences, both for introverts and extroverts.
I’d love to hear any tips you can share as well as I know this is an area many people will have great experience with and others who really need to hear from you because this topic really pushes them outside their comfort zone.
Please share your ideas below and Kerrie and I will come and join the conversation.

Janet: Hello and welcome Janet Beckers here from Wonderful Web TV tip of the week with my gorgeous friend Kerri Phipps and we’re down here at Copacabana beach which you can see behind us.
Today we’re going to be talking about something that Kerrie is absolute expert on which is how do you build those connections, those networks so you build relationships in business, she’s got really practical strategies on how to really do that authentically.
Kerrie: Hi, thank you Janet, loving being here. Yeah, I talk to strangers on planes, trains, and here this morning we had strangers talk to us at the cafe to ask could they pat the dog? And I’m like “That’s really cool” because it’s those everyday interactions they can open extraordinary doors of opportunity.
So Janet and I have been talking about “Do talk to strangers.” How to connect with anyone, anywhere. I’m going to share a quick tip from the book. We have the asking motto which does A for awareness and really by just having this conversation we’re raising awareness of the opportunities that are out there when you talk to strangers.
Janet and I were strangers a few years ago and now we’re friends and I love that because I learned so much from her.
Janet: So we are proof of, should we met at an internet marketing conference, we met on the phone.
But the big thing is Kerrie, what she teaches on her book she does naturally anyway and we’re kind of proof of somebody whose meet me in an event. I meet a lot in events but with all of those people I don’t say “hey come on let’s have coffee down the beach, let’s go for a walk, let’s hangout, on holidays yeah.”
So Kerrie, the thing that comes, I love your philosophy when it comes to building connections. It’s different to what a lot of people see with strategic networking of how do you build those connections and move them quickly to the point of becoming a business conversation. You have a different philosophy so would you mind sharing very quickly that because I think it sets a really nice time.
Kerrie: Because we can be nervous if you’re going somewhere with an agenda, with like a strategy, you might have been told you’ve got to get 5 business customers in an event. And you can be quite nervous about that.
But when you’re connecting without agenda, so you’re just connecting with anyone, anywhere you find those great connections but it’s about starting small. I’m sure that some people watching are extroverts and they’re going to functions and then meeting people. And other people who are just at home going ‘”Can I just have...
