Nowadays it'd be unheard of for someone to stay in the same job their entire career. But for Augusta Braxston Baker, the nearly 40 years she spent at the New York Public Library's 135th Street Branch gave her so much joy that leaving was never an option. Before she got there though, it took a recommendation from none other than Eleanor Roosevelt to help Baker get into Albany Teacher’s College (now the State University of New York at Albany), where she became the first African American to graduate with a degree in Library Science. More impressive, however, was what Baxter did in the early days of her career.

Namely, she identified and removed from the library shelves books that depicted African American characters as lazy, ill-spoken, or illustrated with distorted body features. Eventually, Baker's prowess as a librarian and her advocacy for children's books was rewarded when in 1961 she became the NYPL’s first African American children’s services coordinator overseeing all 82 branches of the New York Public Library, a position she held until her retirement.
