Do you create New Year’s resolutions? I invite you to think about a happiness resolution. Let’s talk about how you do that.
Transcript:
Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in 2 minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and I’m curious. Do you start New Year’s resolutions? Do you keep them? Do you have one for this year? Here in the Northeast, 2022 has gotten off to a rocky start with the weather. My kids have been out of school the first week of January. Not that I’m complaining, I secretly love having them home. But I’ve got to think there are other places where 2022 could use a reset. Adding the Omicron variant and global pandemic on top of the rocky start and us humans are feeling the fatigue. I get it.
So, do you ever pivot on your New Year’s resolution? Personally, I do a word of the year and try to make that a theme. I’ve finally settled on my word. I’ll share it tomorrow.
But back to resolutions. There are some that could help boost your happiness this year. A lot of people make resolutions like paying down debt or losing weight. But what if those types of resolutions are actually setting ourselves up for failure? What if our resolutions don’t have to be a sacrifice?
I invite you to think about a happiness resolution, like a simple habit. Something small, doable and with little sacrifice. For example, gratitude. Sometimes it can be hard to see what we are grateful for as we forge through a pandemic and weather and climate change and political unrest. I would argue that everyone has something to be grateful for, and the happiness rewards of focusing on those things are incredibly enormous. What you focus on grows. We know this. I invite you to consider flipping the script and focusing on gratitude.
This micro-podcast is littered with examples and studies on how gratitude boosts happiness, so it makes perfect sense that we start the new year with tiny gratitude habits that can truly change your quality of life.
Until next time. Share a message of gratitude with someone you love.
