23. What Secular Humanism Can't Explain About Equality:-- Casey Trout on His Christian Miracle (Part 2)

Listen Later

Find Out What Scott's Brother Casey Has to Say to Secular Humanist. Casey Trout is back after listeners sent in all sorts of feedback. In this episode Scott and Casey revisit his argument that equality under the law for race, sex, and class is a Christian miracle. Casey comes with a host of research and some quotes of the major movers in the cause for equality, and Scott uses the feedback he had received to pushback.

If you haven't had a chance to listen to the original episode, here it is: Equality Under the Law is a Christian Miracle: Casey Part 1

Other Topics Discussed:

The beauty of being able to pushback and not be afraid of losing the relaticASonship.

The importance of furthering the discussion by following up and not just sitting on our assumptions of the other's perspective.

Pushback on Casey's argument that Equality Under the Law is a Christian Miracle (*see previous episode).

  • Casey's argument is an oversimplification.
  • What is a "Christian nation?" Significant progress toward equality came as nations became more secular and as the shell of Christianity fell away. Christianity had a dampening effect on the march toward progress. The scale of Christianity is weighted toward Christians who used their religion for political power and oppression.
  • Equality under the law is a multi-faceted progress, of which Christianity is only one factor. It is one only thread in the tapestry that contributed. You might be able to show correlation between Christianity and progress, but not causation.
  • Casey's Responses:

    • Produce a culture that has produced equality in race, sex, and class that is not Christian or has Christian roots.
    • Look at the cultural centers of the other religions. Where would you rather be a woman: India, Saudi Arabia, or in The Netherlands. Where do we see the greatest levels equality in the world? Overwhelmingly in nations that were seeped in Christianity.
    • The prime movers in the causes of equality were always Christians. You have to tear down the evidence that these thinkers were inspired by Christianity, and what actually did move the stone toward equality.
    • All the human institutions in history have blocked the progress of equality. Christian institutions are no different. That just proves that humans are hypocritical. It is only Christians who have done something different than human nature. It was the Christian God who inspired them. How would you explain why human nature changed all of a sudden from an alien anthropologists perspective.
