In this episode, my blog post reflects on the blurred line between work and hobby as a dedicated web designer. From the simplicity of '70s childhood activities like skating and bowling to prioritizing family activities when raising my son, the constant is always work. However, a recent return to roller skating rekindled my love for genuine hobbies, revealing the importance of disconnecting from work and reenergizing with passion projects.
In August of 2019, my days of skating came to an unexpected pause. I rolled my ankle and broke it, leading to an unintended break from one of my favorite hobbies. Though I've since healed, I've not returned to the rink — until now. This fall, accompanied by a dear friend and client, I'm excited to lace up and embrace the joy of skating again.
For a significant period, my primary "hobby" was caring for my parents. It's a chapter I cherish deeply and arguably the most rewarding endeavor I've ever undertaken. Now, with that chapter closed, I find myself ensnared in an all-too-familiar trap: letting my work consume all my time and energy.
Being a solopreneur, it's a constant challenge to strike a balance. However, if my experience with my parents taught me anything, it's that time is fleeting. It's imperative to cherish moments, to engage in what we love, and to ensure we're healthy in doing so. Not only does this bring personal fulfillment, but it also reinvigorates our professional pursuits. Taking breaks, indulging in hobbies, and self-care aren't just personal luxuries — they're essentials.
So, to my fellow freelancers and solopreneurs: Remember to prioritize yourself and your passions. Your work, and more importantly, your well-being, will thank you for it.
