#26 | Agency: The Key to Living a Fulfilled Life | 5 Steps to Take Back Control

Why Agency Matters

You can’t have fulfillment without agency. Period.

Why? Because without agency, you aren’t free…and if you aren’t free…you’re a slave.

Agency means you choose what you’re doing. Most people feel stuck because they’ve surrendered that choice knowingly or unknowingly. Does this sound like anyone you know?

* Working jobs they hate for people they don’t respect, to buy things they don’t need, to impress people they don’t know.

* Watching Netflix eating snacks wishing they were more active, healthy, and fit.

* Waking up day after day feeling like they’re so busy, but when someone asks, “What's going on?”, they don’t have anything exciting to report.

* Feeling trapped inside their own body and life circumstances. Feeling like they have little to no control.

This season is your wake-up call: stop drifting, start choosing.

The Beautiful Thing About Agency

You don’t have to control everything in life. You just need to control what you do. When you start living with agency, the right things are drawn to you—and the wrong things fall away.

So, how do you reclaim agency? Here are five practical ways to start today.

1. Craft a Personal Mission Statement

What do you stand for? Families used to have mottos and coats of arms for a reason—they gave direction and identity. Mine is:

“Growing in virtue, discipline, and relationship up to and into eternity.”

It reminds me daily of what matters most: character, habits, and people. Create your own. Put it where you’ll see it. Let it guide your decisions.

2. Stop Competing for Busyness

Busyness is not a badge of honor. Audit your time. Look back at the last seven days:

* What moved the needle?

* What filled you up?

* What drained you?

Then plan the next seven days with intention. When I hit a funk, I track every 30 minutes of my day for a week. It’s eye-opening and helps me identify ways to escape the funk.

3. Set Boundaries, Not People-Pleasing

Say “no” with confidence. Let your “yes” mean something. Stop filling your schedule with things that don’t fill you up. Start filling yourself up.

4. Reject Comfort, Pursue Growth

Comfort is easy. Growth is hard. Most of us default to the path of least resistance—scrolling, snacking, streaming. But growth lives on the other side of discomfort. Track your habits. Push yourself. Incremental progress compounds.

5. Build a Personal Board of Advisors

You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. Choose wisely. Invite mentors into your life. Share your goals. Ask for feedback. Treat your life like the most important business you’ll ever run—because it is.

Your Next Step

Fulfillment doesn’t happen by accident. It’s built: choice by choice, day by day. Which of these five steps speaks to you most? Start there. Don’t wait for perfect. Just start.

We’re at a crossroads. Every one of us is one choice away from being more fulfilled—or less.

Key Takeaways

* Fulfillment requires agency.

* Agency starts with small, intentional choices.

* Start with one step today.
