Shoes Off Inside with MKT

#26 - Bao Nguyen

Listen Later

Bruce Lee is, without a doubt, the most legendary martial arts figure in modern history. During his short life, which ended tragically when he was only 32 years old, Lee, not only transformed the image of traditional Kung Fu into an art form that had a much broader appeal, he also fought to break down racial and cultural barriers at a time when the civil rights movement was growing in the U.S. Lee’s own experiences with racism and being treated as “the other” influenced how he moved in the world and his identity as an Asian American. A new documentary, “Be Water”, examines the evolution of Bruce Lee and emphasizes the idea that the icon was much more than just a martial arts legend…he was a multi-faceted, multi-dimensional man who cared deeply about equality, justice and diversity…all issues that are in focus right now in the wake of COVID-19 related xenophobia against Asians and the brutal death of George Floyd. In this episode, May has a deep and powerful conversation with the director of “Be Water’ Bao Nguyen.
