The beautiful origin of the words “sakura”

昔の人は、山に神様がいると思っていて、

山の神様を「サの神様」と呼んでいたそうです。

春になると、サの神様が山から降りてきて、

木の上にある「御座（みくら）」で休んで、花を咲かせました。

そして、昔の人は花の下でお酒を飲み、歌い、

今年もお米がたくさん獲れますように、

と神様にお願いしたそうです。

これが「桜」と「お花見」の語源と言われています。

春が待ち遠しいですね。

むかしの ひとは、やまに かみさまが いると おもっていて、

やまの かみさまを「さの かみさま」とよんでいたそうです。

はるに なると、さの かみさまが やまから おりてきて、

きの うえに ある「みくら」でやすんで、はなを さかせました。

そして、むかしの ひとは はなの したで おさけを のみ、うたい、

ことしも おこめが たくさん とれますように、

と かみさまに おねがいしたそうです。

これが「さくら」と「おはなみ」の ごげん といわれています。

はるが まちどおしいですね。

Many years ago, people believed gods lived in the mountains,

and they called the mountain gods “Sa no kamisama.”

When spring arrived, the gods descended from the mountains,

rested on their “throne (Mi-kura)” on the top of trees, and make flowers bloom.

Then, people would drink sake and sing under the blossoms,

praying to the gods for lots of rice harvest that year.

This is said to be the origin of the words “sakura” (cherry blossom)

and “hanami” (flower viewing).

I can't wait for spring!
