This episode highlights that life's unexpected disruptions can profoundly impact freelancers, often due to self-imposed standards of perfection.

Today's episode is different from what I had planned. I had intended to share insights from one of my fellow web designer friends' blogs, but as my post from years ago suggests, things often go differently than planned.
Last weekend, my husband and I took a train trip to Vancouver. It was a fun time, marking two events – my speaking engagement at WordCamp Vancouver and our 34th wedding anniversary. However, upon our return, we both started feeling under the weather. To our surprise, we tested positive for COVID-19 a few days later.
I hadn't penciled "contracting COVID" into my calendar. In preparation for some end-of-the-month travels, I had envisioned this week to be one of productive work. Honestly, getting COVID was never on any of my to-do lists. I've been vigilant for years, primarily because of concerns for my parents. Yet, during this trip, I became complacent, opting not to wear a mask for most of our train journey. I'm reaping the consequences of that choice now.
The reality of being a small business owner is that you can't foresee every hiccup. Nor can you expect perfection, even with the most meticulous planning. If we fixate on this illusion of perfection, aiming for the ideal week or the optimal workload, we'll only be constantly battling disappointment.
This setback, while substantial, will only partially hinder my work. It's a reminder that I, just like everyone else, am allowed to have off weeks. And so are you. The essence of my message today echoes the sentiment of my old blog post: Life's interruptions don't signify the end. Instead, they offer opportunities for resilience, growth, and renewed perspective.
