#28 - What The Hell Is A Limited Belief?

This week we are talking about limiting beliefs, what they are, how they are holding you back and how you can change them and create new beliefs! 

  • What is an outdated/limited belief?
    • Started as a kid
    • Not your fault, not anyone's fault
    • Once you believe something you’ll filter out evidence to the contrary.
    • They were picked up from parents, teachers, siblings, who didn’t mean any harm
  • What is a limited belief?
    • Belief - an acceptance that a statement is true or that something exists. Something one accepts as true or real; a firmly held opinion or conviction. Something you hold to be true from your perspective
    • Limited = confined within limits
  • My biggest limited belief “I’m so unloveable”
    • How did this happen?
    • Childhood
    • Held me back
  • Common Limited Beliefs
    • I lack motivation.
    • I procrastinate too much.
    • I don’t have time.
    • I don’t have enough resources.
    • It’s too late to change.
    • I have too many responsibilities.
    • I have no clue who I am.
    • I have no clue where to start.

  • The Reticular Activating System (RAS) 
    • a bundle of nerves at our brainstem that filters out unnecessary information so the important stuff gets through. https://medium.com/desk-of-van-schneider/if-you-want-it-you-might-get-it-the-reticular-activating-system-explained-761b6ac14e53
    • RAS takes what you focus on and creates a filter for it. It only the pieces that are important to you. 
    • RAS seeks information that validates your beliefs. It filters the world through the parameters you give it, and your beliefs shape those parameters. If you think you are bad at giving speeches, you probably will be. If you believe that you work efficiently, you most likely do. 
    • RAS helps you see what you want to see and in doing so, influences your actions.
    • Intention can help with RAS by revealing the people, information and opportunities that help you achieve them.
  • This is great news because you can choose to change, and retrain your brain
  • Exercise
    • Awareness 
    • Awareness of thoughts
    • When you find a limited belief. Write it out, put it on trial, put that on someone else, remember this anytime that limited belief pops in your head
    • This requires daily effort! 
  • Commit to curiosity and compassion during this journey!
    • This journey isn’t easy, it takes daily practice but it’s worth it!
