#29: It’s Quieter Up Here – Partial Discharge Testing in the UHF Range

Listen Later

Optimize PD measurement sensitivity for reliable insulation defect detection in noisy environments.

In this episode of Energy Talks, you will find out how partial discharge (PD) measurements performed in the ultra-high frequency (UHF) range can be a reliable alternative or complementary PD detection approach in noisy onsite testing environments.

The conventional method for PD measurement according to the IEC 60270 standard allows a precise calibration but requires a sufficiently high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the measurement circuit – this is however very difficult to obtain when performing PD measurements on site.

OMICRON PD application expert Ulrike Broniecki discusses how PD testing in the UHF range – such as with our UHF 800 system – can help you obtain a better measurement signal-to-noise ratio for reliable insulation condition assessment and defect detection in noisy testing environments. She also highlights the benefits of using the UHF PD measurement method on gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), gas-insulated lines (GIL), oil-filled transformers and high-voltage power cable terminations.
