Effective storytelling has limits. Even if you're writing a full-length novel, you can't have too many characters. (Well, you can, but you shouldn't.) You want your readers to be able to stay on track with your story and that's where the limits come in. The limits are all about making the story the best it can be FOR YOUR READERS. Everything you do for a work that's meant to be published should be for your readers (except maybe the first draft).
